APPLICATION OF AUTOMATED METHODS FOR MEASUREMENT OF GHG FLUXES (CO2 & CH4) FROM WETLAND ECOSYSTEMS
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Determining the productivity of atmospheric carbon uptake by terrestrial ecosystems is an important task for understanding the causes of Earth's climate change and planning necessary measures to prevent catastrophic consequences. Long-term and highly accurate standardized measurements of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes increase the availability and usability of accumulated data for modeling ongoing processes. The use of automated systems for studying GHG fluxes allows accurate measurements at minimal disturbance of the soil surface to be carried out and high resolution datasets for extended periods of time to be obtained. Due to the above advantages, chamber measurements play an important role while establishing long-term observations. In last decade, the eddy covariance (EC) technique has become the standard method to estimate net carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) exchange between the atmosphere and soil, plant organs or complete ecosystems.Parallel observations been carried out during the growing season (from May to October) at the hollow-ridge landscape on Bakchar bog at the field station Plotnikovo, West Siberia. A good agreement found between seasonal CO2 and CH4 fluxes obtained by different measurement methods.GHG fluxes have a local spatial variability: higher net CO2 uptake observed in open sedge-sphagnum fen and ridges with higher photosynthesis and respiration rates, while higher CH4 emission take place in hollow microlandscape. Steady seasonal CO2 and CH4 emission revealed from tiny bog’s lake surface.
