CARBON DIOXIDE AND METHANE FLUX BALANCE ACROSS THE WATER–ATMOSPHERE INTERFACE OF LAKE BAIKAL DURING THE SPRING SEASON
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Based on multiyear data (2013, 2016–2018, 2021–2024), a quantitative analysis of the spatial and interannual variability of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) fluxes across the water–atmosphere interface of Lake Baikal was performed for the spring period (late May – first half of June). It was found that the southern and central basins predominantly act as sources of CO₂ to the atmosphere, whereas the northern basin exhibits a persistent sink of carbon dioxide. Methane emission is observed across the entire lake area, with maxima in the zones influenced by riverine discharge. Integral estimates demonstrate a negative balance (net carbon uptake by the lake), with the mass of absorbed carbon considerably exceeding carbon emission in the form of CH₄. The obtained results indicate that during the spring season Lake Baikal functions as a net sink of atmospheric carbon.
