ASSESSMENT OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF CHLOROPHYLL-A CONCENTRATION IN LAKE BAIKAL SURFACE WATER BASED ON FLUORESCENCE MEASUREMENTS

Abstract:
Variations in the concentration and photosynthesis of aquatic biota are important components of the processes that determine the vital functions of aquatic biota, the carbon dioxide content in Lake Baikal water, and, consequently, its fluxes in the water-atmosphere system. Laboratory methods for determining algal chlorophyll concentrations are insufficiently time-consuming and labor-intensive, limiting the collection of detailed information on their distribution throughout the lake. Using several cycles of shipboard measurements as an example, this paper demonstrates our method for stepwise calibration of the results of synchronous measurements of fluorescence characteristics using flow-through and laboratory fluorimeters and data from a classical laboratory method for determining chlorophyll-a concentration.
