STUDY OF SULFUR DIOXIDE AND MERCURY TRANSPORT IN THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE SOUTHERN BAIKAL REGION USING NUMERICAL MODELING
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Based on continuous measurement data of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and gaseous elemental mercury (Hg⁰) concentrations conducted at the Listvyanka station from 2024 to 2025, it was established that the maximum values of these pollutants are recorded in winter under prevailing northwestern air flows. Data analysis revealed a strong correlation between SO₂ and Hg⁰ concentrations (r > 0.7), indicating a common source, likely coal-fired thermal power generation. To model transport processes using the HYSPLIT model, groups of meteorological conditions were identified where the contribution of regional sources at the observation point is most pronounced. Modeling results demonstrated adequate reproduction of the spatial distribution of the studied pollutants.
