We present a systematic comparative analysis of 17 probability density function (PDF) models from the literature describing optical intensity fluctuations in turbulent media. Our analysis spans a wide range of Rytov parameter regimes — weak ( ), strong ( ) and intermediate ( ) fluctuations — and three propagation geometries: plane wave, narrow beam, and spherical wave. We examine the applicability of different PDF models for predicting signal fading behavior and present results on how aperture averaging transforms the statistical characteristics of received power fluctuations.
